In an obvious bid for relevance, the maker of the Firefox browser Mozilla is dipping its toes into cryptocurrency — a lot to the chagrin of two individuals who have been instrumental within the software program’s creation.
Mozilla announced on New Year’s Eve that it’s accepting crypto donations, garnering strongly-worded responses from two builders who labored on the software program that powers the browser.
Pulling no punches, programmer-turned-nightclub proprietor Jamie Zawinski — whose accolades embody the coinage of the time period “Mozilla” — had harsh phrases for the account.
“Hello, I’m certain that whoever runs this account has no concept who I’m, however I based @mozilla and I’m right here to say fuck you and fuck this,” Zawinski, higher identified by his deal with jwz, tweeted. “Everybody concerned within the mission must be witheringly ashamed of this determination to companion with planet-incinerating Ponzi grifters.”

Fellow early Mozilla-er Peter Linss, who created the Gecko browser engine, which Firefox runs on, had an F-bomb of his personal for the corporate.
“I’m 100% with @jwz on this,” Linss wrote. “What. The. Precise. Fuck. You have been meant to be higher than this.”
Evidently each Zawinski and Linss’ anger stems from the increasingly-common criticism that cryptocurrency mining is very harmful to the environment, as evidenced by each of their Twitter feeds. Futurism has reached out to each programmers for touch upon the topic.
As companies and celebrities embrace cryptocurrency, it appears that evidently the vocal minority pushing again in opposition to it’s getting louder — and at this level, essentially the most the remainder of us can do is seize some popcorn and tag alongside for the experience.
